Who is this course intended for?
This course was created to assist anyone who needs to set up a limited conservatorship in California for an individual with a developmental disability. We understand that hiring an attorney is expensive and unaffordable for many people. The purpose of this course is to give you the tools you need to represent yourself in court instead of retaining an attorney.
-
What is a "limited" conservatorship?
There are different types of conservatorships in California. A limited conservatorship is specifically for individuals with a developmental disability.
-
What type of limited conservatorship does this course cover?
This course provides information about establishing a limited conservatorship of THE PERSON, and not a limited conservatorship of the estate. A conservatorship of the person gives you the rights to make decisions for an individual's personal care, such as place of residence and medical care. A conservatorship of the estate gives you rights to manage an individual's financial assets. The majority of individuals who need a limited conservatorship do not have assets other than public benefits and therefore do not need a conservatorship of the estate. If you do need to set up a conservatorship of the estate to manage an individual's assets other than public benefits, we suggest reaching out to an attorney for further guidance.
